I am delighted to have this opportunity to work with you in this program. I hope that you learn many useful things about how organizations operate and gain much information that will be useful to you in your career. Let me tell you something about myself. I was born and raised in New Jersey, but I now live in Honolulu. After I completed an MBA in Finance/Accounting at UCLA, I worked for W.R. Grace in New York City as a capital budget analyst in their international division for two years. Although analyzing overseas investment projects for Grace was exciting, especially the travel, my real love was Wall Street.

As it happened, Merrill Lynch was looking for MBAs who were fluent in Asian languages. Since I speak and read Japanese fluently (along the way, I had earned a doctorate in East Asian languages and civilizations from Harvard University), Merrill Lynch recruited me in New York, and then sent me to Japan for five years. I was in Tokyo during the heady days of the economic "bubble" of the 1980s, when the stock market and land prices more than tripled in value. I acted as Merrill Lynch's worldwide spokesperson and chief analyst for the Japanese consumer electronics industry, covering exciting companies, such as Sony, Sharp, Fuji Photo, Sanyo, Matsushita, JVC, Pioneer and TDK. My job involved frequent contact with top management at these companies, analysis of financial statements and production of investment recommendations, ranging from short daily updates and recommendations, to quarterly reports of up to 70 pages on each company. My recommendations earned me the honor of being chosen as number-one analyst for Japanese consumer electronics industry by Euromoney magazine. My opinions were also frequently quoted in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Business Week, Fortune magazine and others. It was very exciting, and I loved the job.

Message from Craig Cleveland, Ph.D.

Welcome to Anaheim University! I look forward to meeting and speaking with you throughout the MBA Online program.

I see teaching as involving a reciprocal relationship between professors and students - I believe that professors have duties to their students and that students have duties to their professors. I believe that it is my responsibility as a professor to provide students with the following:

• an environment conducive to learning,
• knowledge that will help them be successful in achieving their goals,
• materials, opportunities, and feedback that will help them learn
• help them become and remain motivated to be successful both in their studies while simultaneously applying knowledge to solve problems in their lives.

I will be your facilitator in the learning process, rather than the deliverer of information. I recognize that students learn in a variety of ways, and I attempt to accommodate these methods. I encourage you to find personalized methods to understand and retain concepts, and I will assist you in providing my own customized examples for explanation of concepts that elude you. In addition to different learning processes, I often find that students must simply be given the confidence to experiment in the application of newly gained knowledge and to ask questions that promotes individual thinking. In an effort to encourage discussion, I am always available to you.

Welcome to Anaheim University! I embrace teaching as an opportunity to inspire and empower my students through a lively and interactive classroom. I want students to feel personally changed by their participation in any course I teach. Teaching is not just about lecturing; it is about presenting theories, concepts, and empirical material in such a way that students can immediately integrate this information into their personal and professional life.

I am passionate about finding the most effective ways of stimulating and sustaining intellectual growth among those who enter my classroom. Learning is a complex process that is individual, content and context specific. As an instructor, I am attentive to these factors and work to be flexible, adapting my approaches according to the needs of students, subject matter and setting. I believe it is crucial for instructors to cultivate learning partnerships with students. Teaching is about igniting transformative learning; empowering students to take responsibility for their learning, inspiring courage to grow intellectually, cultivating curiosity, providing opportunities for developing relationships, clarifying values, uplifting the spirit and igniting action.

I am very excited about joining the Anaheim University team. Although an American, I have spent more than a decade living and working in Asia. I have lived in Japan, Thailand and now Vietnam. I have held a number of jobs including the Northeast Thailand Regional Manager for a Dutch-owned export company and the General Affairs Manager for ZOA Thailand which provided educational support for ethnic minority refugees fleeing violence in Burma/Myanmar.

I have taught at a number of universities in Thailand, but primarily at Bangkok University. I have also taught at branches of U.S. universities in Asia as well as an online U.S. university. Currently, I am teaching at a branch of an Australian University in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.

I am an active researcher and writer. My most recently completed book, Expatriates in Asia: Breaking Free from the Colonial Paradigm, Chandos Publishing (Oxford) Limited, 2008, focuses on the impact of one’s own culture as well as the culture one is interacting with in cross-cultural professional relationships. I am also the lead author of The Nature of Asian Firms: An Evolutionary Perspective, Chandos Publishing (Oxford) Limited 2007 as well as the author of a number of journal articles, book chapters and conference papers that deal with the issues involving international business. Dr.William McPherson
William McPherson, Ph.D.

Message from William McPherson, Ph.D.

Welcome! I plan on providing an online teaching environment that facilitates student learning. To provide a better understanding of who your instructor is, I have provided some tenets of my teaching philosophy for your perusal.

My philosophy of teaching is to provide a learning atmosphere where I function as a teacher, facilitator, advisor, listener, member, and moderator. I believe my enthusiasm comes through the moment students encounter me. I seek to achieve a rapport with students. I provide students information and experiences that will prepare them for their current or future careers. I think teachers should be upbeat, postive, and entertaining. I make the online learning atmosphere tension-free and enjoyable.

As a business educator, I seek to ensure that all of my students get educated for and about business. I encourage active, rather than passive learning. While estimates vary, many researchers believe that most people learn 12% from hearing and 82% by doing. With this in mind, I actively engage my students in discussions and practical activities. I incorporate a wide variety of learning resources into my teaching repertoire. All are designed to promote active learning.

I truly believe any type of activity, if each student assumes responsibility, is appropriate for facilitating learning. The practical nature of the business curriculum lends itself to coincide with my teaching style. In most classes I try to provide projects that allow students to apply their knowledge and experience to a business-related topic.

My teaching philosophy mirrors the sentiments of the following:

  • I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand. (Chinese Proverb)
  • What we have to do, we learn by doing. (Aristole)

I believe these to hold true. My assignments and activities relate the importance of learning by doing. My teaching philosophy applies various tenets of Malcolm Knowles' Adult Learning Theory and Bloom's Taxonomy. The learning activities and class projects incorporate one or more of the following tenets: knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation. I foster an environment that is conducive to student learning and is student-centered. My philosophy makes me effective because I engage students and myself in "doing", interacting, praising, guiding facilitating, coaching and mentoring.

I look forward to and welcome feedback from students. I communicate expectations and believe that given these expectations and groundwork that each student will suceed. My teaching promotes an online classroom environment that welcomes learning. I feel that main objectives of education for and about business are acheived through my philosophy on the importance of active learning with a focus on the practical nature of the curriculum.

I look forward to a great experience for you and I!

Message from John Nebeck, Ph.D.

Welcome fellow learners,

I began my academic career quite by accident and it has been a wonderful experience. After more than twenty years in consumer and organizational marketing, with emphasis on planning and analysis, I accepted a three-year position with Viterbo University (then Viterbo College). The intent was to return to private industry after this "sabbatical." This fall I will have been with Viterbo for sixteen years where I serve as the marketing department chair and primary instructor for marketing as well as the capstone courses in management for the undergraduate program. The last fifteen years have been rewarding as they have fostered the merger of the practitioner with the academic; that is, the ability and opportunity to move academic thought and theory out of the classroom into the real world. Everything we will be doing in Strategic Planning and Management relates the application of academics to real world situations. My view of strategic management includes the combination of intuition and analysis, what you think plus what you know.

I very much enjoy working with adult learners especially at the graduate level where I view the student as a peer learner. I look forward to working with each of you and believe you will find this study a rewarding experience.

Hello Students,

I have served as a Professor of Management at a small, upper-division university near Huntsville, Alabama. A few additional facts about me:

  • Prior to joining my home university in Alabama, I was a human resources executive for a major oil company.
  • Teach a variety of management courses, but concentrate mainly in human resources management and labor relations. Courses include both conventional classroom and distance learning formats.
  • Have published articles and commentary in scholarly journals and management publications such as The Wall Street Journal's National Business Employment Weekly, the Conference Board magazine, Across the Board, and Harvard Business Review.
  • Serve on the editorial board of a management and technology journal and participate in academic conferences.

Many of the students I have taught are mid-career professionals returning to college, after having discontinued their studies at some point in the past. These student profiles are remarkably like those of Anaheim University students. That's one of the things that attracted me to Anaheim; I enjoy working with adult learners who can bring professional experience and a real dedication to their studies. I look forward to getting to know each of you as you pursue your studies at Anaheim University.
